Does It Pay to Add Winter Peas to a Cover Crop Mix?
Winter peas can be a great addition to a cover crop mix for many growers, but the cost of these seeds can be high and the return on investment doesn’t always pay off. USDA plant research geneticist Lisa Kissing Kucek is in Madison, Wis., at the forage research center where she and other researchers have been breeding winter peas for 7 years in a nationwide cover crop breeding network to study spring vigor, winter vigor, biomass and other benefits of various cover crop species.

I dont agree with the comment regarding where fungicides are applied it breaks down faster, maybe he miss-spoke, but anywhere we MISS a fungicide on corn, the residue breaks down MUCH faster.

I look forward to hearing more on this issue and using strip till to fend against it; You are the one who opened my eyes up to nutrient stratification last year. We've been no-tilling corn for about 8 years on soybean stubble and like you said, just broadcast a lot of N (ESN) & K out overtop of the ground and hoping the best from Mother Nature. We also strip-till with a knife unit, putting stablized 28% in the ground (8" deep), but only on previous year's winter wheat...then clover cover crop ground (all burnt down fall prior to planting). Soybeans we broadcast NPK and lightly disk or VT in then air-seed with JD 1990ccs. 1/2 of our acres is only a corn soybean rotation that strictly gets no-tilled corn and light till pre-planting soybeans....so this is the ground I'm most concerned with nutrient stratification. Thanks for your research and sharing.
